Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday met a Chinese delegation headed by Chen Zhou, the Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the ruling party of China, to discuss progress achieved in the relations between the two countries.

The meeting noted a “new era” of relations had begun after the signing of a strategic partnership agreement between the two countries last year, highlighted the visa-free travel officially signed between them last week, as well as “successful” high-level visits between the states, the Georgian Parliament said.

Papuashvili “positively assessed” relations between the Georgian legislative body and the National People's Congress of China, and emphasised the importance of exchanges between sectoral committees and parliamentary friendship groups.

On his part, Zhou pointed out Georgia’s “good results” in economic development and promotion of the business environment, and noted the country had an “important role” in international and regional affairs, as well as in the successful implementation of the Middle Corridor, a logistics route connecting Central Asia and China to Europe via the South Caucasus.

The official also extended his gratitude to the Georgian side for their interest in Chinese President Xi Jinping’s One Belt One Road initiative - a global infrastructure development strategy - and expressed readiness to further deepen trade relations.

The parties also confirmed their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and China.
